"I heard it through the Grapevine!" Did you even know the federal government has a raisin reserve? The Agriculture Department controls supply and demand by simply taking tons of raisins away from farmers. A decade ago, one California farmer refused to hand over his raisins to the feds. The case finally made it to the Supreme Court, which sent it back to the state appeals court. But that might be moot, since Florida Rep. Trey Radel has introduced a bill to kill the raisin reserve. He said it’s just theft of a farmer’s crop, and it violates the Fifth Amendment right to just compensation. Incidentally, the raisin reserve has been around since the Truman Administration. It’s a perfect example of how, in Washington, bad ideas never die. They just hang around until they’re so old, they have more wrinkles than the raisin reserve. Semper Fi!
