“I may not have chosen this path but I walk it with love and pride.” Acts 27:27-44 Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food—you haven’t eaten anything. (Acts 27:33 NIV) For every person in need there is someone needed to care for them. While we have incredible people in our society like nurses, doctors, personal care assistants, physical therapist and occupational therapists there are also every day people living with and caring for someone in need. They may be caring for children, grandchildren, parents, in-laws, the disabled, the chronically ill, the elderly, or the dying. They often do it day-in and day-out, with the vast majority receiving no remuneration. In Australia alone there are 5.5 million unpaid carers. This love and attention relieves a huge burden on our medical system and provides care by those closest to the one in need. One carer recently said, “I may not have chosen this path, but I walk it with love and pride.” While there is not enough money in our country to pay such incredible people, we must be aware of caring for them, as their task is often a challenging one. You will all know someone who is a carer. It may be a mother to her young children, an older person caring for their ageing spouse, or a sibling attending to the needs of their disabled brother or sister. If you know someone who is a carer, help by giving them encouragement, a cooked meal, mow their lawns or give them an afternoon off. If you are the carer, you are probably the type of person who is overly capable and protective of those who rely on you. Allow someone else’s assistance so that you can be energised to continue doing the invaluable work you do. Paul knew the value of caring for those around him. The crew on the ship he was aboard had been working tirelessly through a storm for 14 days straight. Although the storm was not yet over, Paul knew how important it was to stop and give nourishment to the workers. Often once we stop and receive rest we find the energy and determination to continue on the challenging journey we are on. Life can be demanding, so let ‘s take the opportunity to receive the rest we need when we are given the opportunity. Lord, thank You for the amazing people in our world who care for others. May You give them rest in their times of weariness and strength in their times of need.
