“I really didn’t think we should do another White Light/White Heat…we had to demonstrate this other side of us…” Lou Reed I was pleased with the direction we were going and with the new calmness in the group, and thinking about a good future…” Maureen Tucker SONG OF THE WEEK: “What Goes On” (from I LIKE THE STREET, 2011). My second cover of a Lou Reed/Velvet Underground song concentrates on the classic pop music streak running through the Reed/VU songbook. I added harmonies and consolidated the verses. As the first two VU album had a trance-inducing and gritty pathos, the third album was nearly jangly guitar-pop not far removed from The Byrds or The Hollies. Lou Reed said I really didn’t think we should make another WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT. I thought it would be a terrible mistake…we had to demonstrate the other side of us. Otherwise, we would become this one-dimensional thing, and that had to be avoided at all costs. Maureen Tucker said, I was pleased with the direction we were going and with the new calmness in the group, and thinking about a good future, hoping people would smarten up and some record company would take us on and do us justice. Doug Yule said the album was a lot of fun. The sessions were constructive and happy and creative, everybody was working together. Even though John Cale was gone, the dirty cathedral-like organ on VU’s “What Goes On” felt like Cale was still there. As for my take, I consolidated the verses and added three-part harmony, imagining David Bowie’s early work and British Invasion pop of the Sixties. I played all the parts excepting the drums, played by Keith C. Kavanaugh.
