I think the money quote in the article was: Of course everyone in the region loves Mister Rogers Neighborhood but we wanted to reach out to the kids of today. Im pretty sure that Fred Rogers would agree that kids of today are pretty much the same as kids of yesterday. All kids need to hear a quiet, loving voice. I think that the idea that toddlers and young children of today need/want fast paced and highly stimulative entertainment is a sheer nonsense. Young children need a slower pace. Its the parents who are demanding that childrens programming needs to be faster paced, because they (the parents) are bored with the slower paced Mister Rogers. Personally, I think one of the reasons we are seeing so many children with attention deficit problems is that we are forcing on them too much fast-paced stimulation and they simply arent ready for it developmentally. Also, Fred Rogers never cared about monetizing his creations, unlike the CTW, which has made hundreds of millions off of its Sesame Street franchise. Rogers seemed to only care about telling kids how special they are. I guess he figured that was hard to do while hocking a cheap, made-in-China, King Friday puppet for 25 bucks. As far as these Pittsburgh institutions kicking Mister Rogers out of the neighborhood, well, Andy Warhol crap still makes gobs of money, but all Mister Rogers does is give kids a sense of self-worth.
