“I want my country back“ is a refrain that is often heard - TopicsExpress

“I want my country back“ is a refrain that is often heard these days in “right wing” discourse. The phrase elicits conservative concepts of bygone days, the appeal of a time when mom stayed home and raised the kids and with an apple pie and dinner waiting for dad at 5 pm. This catchphrase is similar to those I heard recently at a small town city council meeting where a few citizens were haranguing the council for allowing large construction projects that plan to develop new tracts with hundreds of homes. “We moved here because of the small size city and we want it to stay that way” was the complaint of many speakers. For the past two years bloggers and “right wing” pundits have expended gallons of ink and untold bundles of digital pixels attempting to stir up memories of the way we were. The memories of the way we were, just like in the movie, is not the way we are, nor are those memories a pattern of the way we will be. It is time to get our boots unstuck from the black clay of the past and make plans for to the greener pastures of the future.
