“IN OUR DAY” “NOW” Every spare minute of every day was spent on local park or green...20 aside, no referee, teams consisting of mixture of 5 to 16 year olds,4 jumpers made 2 goals and who ever brought the best ball was brill coz that got used.....most went home for short period when they were hungry. Never no problems/trouble or you got smack round the head off one of the numerous council park keepers Empty Parks/unattended full of used syringes and broken glass and due to climate change usually water logged/bared non grass areas Competitive school leagues, most school years consisting of 1st and second league so there was always the incentive to get into the first team, Also if you was good enough you were always invited to play in school team a year or two years higher by the dedicated teachers who managed the teams beit out of school hours or further a field on a Saturday morning No competitiveness in schools/no interest by teachers to give up unpaid out of hours dedication/no one to govern and organise league systems within catchment areas for school. Occasional schools football tournaments may be organised under the fun for all umbrella (and a school may participate in that if they have a kit !!! and means of getting to the venue You made the decision if you played against boys or teams older (you knew your own limitations) than your selves, if you were already talented to agree this brought you onto be a better player 10 fold, a stronger player, everything in this scenario fed the need you had for a challenge, and you were always trying to get past that kid 3 years older...eventually you did and that was the best feeling in the world Regardless of your talent ,for example if you a 10 year old and far more able that other 10 year olds, making the game so easy for you, and the team you represent are “doing well” by winning 20 or 30 nil every week....That is how it stays because of same age team restrictions.....We don’t have 17 0r 18 year old Wayne Rooney’s restricted to playing against same age We played For Grimsby Town colts at time, we also played for School teams in your own year and if good enough years above, we also played for local pub team and if it didn’t clash with mid week training also a very competitive 5 aside league....again varying ages (and this was all in same week throughout a season You play for an Academy team at young/I’m talking Lincolnshire based here not Man U or Arsenal here(prob apart from school team you are not permitted to play for any other team even during a summer weekend tournament) You may laugh but Grimsby was a breeding ground for local talent step stoning onto higher things. The local successful league one side full of local lads who had progressed due to all the previous points mentioned GRIMSBY TOWN FC –Not a local lad in sight, struggling away in the Conference with on loan players Youth footy costs every parent per training session per game..to park at training etc etc/Too easy for people from all areas of life to become a FA qualified youth soccer coach with no experience at all, and a lot of em are only in it to put the profits into any senior team they may have or bring revenue into the local sports and social club they are based at they are only in it for small financial rewards .Training costs, subs cost...no interest in the development of a kid what so ever. Every team beit school, local league, junior league 5 aside league had footy kits on tap Every year teams beg stealing borrowing etc to scrat up a few hundred quid to get the next size kit together, or buy some training cones or save up enough to pay pitch fees.......ABSOLUTLEY SHOCKING WITH THE 100s of MILLIONS PASSING IN AND Out of the game REFERENCE Foreign players taking the millions of each club and back to academies in their own countries (CRAIG JOHNSON/TALKSPORT INTERVIEW IS A MUST LISTEN...THE MAN IS SO PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR GAME)EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO THAT INTERVIEW) Coaches were ex pros, long winded experienced guys who said it how it was .You’d never hear them saying footys for everyone for fun or fred Blog’s can only spend so long on a footy pitch coz that’s the rules........ A YOUNG BOY CANNOT SPEND A FULL MATCH ON A FOOTBALL FIELD (ITS THE LAW),EVEN IN 20 OR 30 MIN EACH WAY MATCHES,TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON COACHING TALENTED KIDS THE WRONG WAY,TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON TRAINING WHICH KIDS HATE.....THEY ARE KIDS THEY ARE NATURALLY FIT BY PLAYING FOOTBALL ANYWHERE ANYTIME WITH ANYTHING...THEY WANT TO BE COMPETITIVE AND WIN AND THE SYSTEM STOPS THEM....THEY BECOME BORED REFERENCE It’s time to get off the grass at young age, onto small confined hard surfaced areas to learn the craft...surfaces the UK weather does not mean cancelled cancel called off etc...The kids will go onto grass at later age as a much more skilled technical player
