~~~INSIDE AFRICA ~~~ South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassin a wide variety of cultures, languages and religions. Its pluralistic makup is reflected in the constitutions recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country on earth. South Africa is ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank, and is considered to be a newly industrialised country. Its economy is the largest and most developed in Africa and the 28th-largest on earth. Since the end of apartheid, South Africas unique multicultural character has become integral to its national identity, about 80 percent of South Africans are of black African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups speakin different Bantu languages, nine of which hav official status. The remainin population consists of Africas largest communities of European, Asian and multiracial ancestry. Al ethnic and linguistic groups hav political representation in the countrys constitutional democracy, which comprises a parliamentary republic and nine provinces.
