#IWCF08 What is Normal Formation Pressure? • In sedimentation process, layers are deposited one over other. • If the formation is porous and permeable, due to continuous deposition and pressure exerted by the overlying layer, the formation fluid is squeezed out of the formation pores. • As long as the formation fluid has escape avenue, the pressure bleeds and approaches the normal value. • Pressure Gradient = Pressure/ TVD of the point where pressure is experienced. • Thus, Formation Pressure Gradient = Formation Pressure/ TVD of the point where pressure is experienced. • If the value of formation pressure gradient falls between 0.433 psi/feet to 0.465 psi/feet, we consider the formation to be normally pressed. • Note: 0.433 and 0.465 is included in the range of normal pressure gradient.
