“If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered,” (Pr. 21:13). Here again we come to one who is just poor, not a fool, not a mocker. People are poor for many reasons not their own. We will never know what they do with what we give them. So give them more than mere money. Give them attention. Ask their name and a bit about their situation and accompany your gift (maybe a sack lunch instead of money) with prayer for them on the spot, if that is acceptable to them. Our local gospel mission has “tickets” for distribution offering a hot meal and a warm place to stay for the night. I have some in my car for those divine appointments.
