******Important from Linda Perko, Director of GAO***** Hi Everyone! The brunch is almost here and we need your help! First, we want to thank everyone who has signed up to attend or sent an item or a donation! Thank you! If you are coming but havent signed up, please just send us an email. Reservations are still available. As many of you know, Greyhound Adoption of Ohio has been helping greyhounds to find loving homes for more than two decades. Through the tough economy and numerous challenges, weve never slowed our efforts to help our beloved pups. Two weeks ago, we matched an all-time record, with 8 greyhounds to new homes in 1 weekend! This doesnt happen without tremendous cost and effort. With all the dogs, come all the expenses. Our program experienced a tremendous blow, on May 14th, 2012, with the opening of the Horseshoe Casino, in downtown Cleveland. Prior to that, much of the growth of GAO was sustained by the $35,000-$50,000 earned, annually, as part of the Nautica Charity Poker Festival. The Festival could not be sustained, with the new casino so close by, and the Nautica Poker venue closed one week after the Horseshoe opened. With the instant loss of revenue and the ever-increasing influx of greyhounds needing homes, it has been difficult to keep up. Our current balance at the Twinsburg Veterinary Hospital is $7,232.69, which is the highest it has ever been, in our 21 years. Well be having a special Fund-A-Cause segment in Sundays program (Thank you, Roy), to help us cover this outstanding balance. Just yesterday, our dear old girl, Kensie (10-year-old brood mama) went in to have her veterinary work completed, so she could find her first home, as a pet. Unfortunately, Kensies teeth were so bad, it wasnt possible to have both her dental and spay done at the same time, like we do with most dogs. Kensie was under anesthesia for 1 1/2 hours, for just her dental, with 24 teeth extracted. Keeping her sedated longer could have been dangerous, so she will have to go back for her spay procedure. Kensie is a dear girl and she so deserves the very best. Its such a shame that she never had this attended to. Prior to her dental, her teeth were so painful that she wouldnt allow us to touch her mouth or face. We expected her to feel pretty bad for a few days, while she recovered, so I was amazed to see her running and jumping and wagging like a puppy, this morning! Despite the fact that her procedure was just done, the pain was obviously less than she had been experiencing, with all her rotted and infected teeth! Were mixing her food, in the blender, for the time being, but shell soon be better than new and ready to find a couch of her own! Kensies dental bill, alone, was $734.00. Were telling you about Kensie and the others because we really need your help to make this Sundays brunch a success. Please read on and help, if you can. WE ARE STILL VERY MUCH IN NEED OF ITEMS FOR THE LIVE AND SILENT AUCTIONS! In getting ready for the brunch, we are looking for items of general interest - tech items, toys, small appliances, gift cards (do you have any from last year youve never used?), etc. If you know of a restaurant or a company or have a friend who knows someone that sells merchandise or provides a service, perhaps you could ask if they might provide a gift card! WINE IS VERY POPULAR (the good kind - not the kind I drink). We have always received a donation or two of some nice wines, but none so far, this year. WE ARE STILL IN NEED OF LARGER ITEMS. I know it sounds like a lot to ask, but it take a lot to run the GAO kennel, so sometimes, we have to just ask. ;-) As my mom always said You dont know unless you ask. Do you or does your company have a condo they rent out thats not always rented? Might they consider donating a week for the greyhounds? Do you have airline miles that have piled up, as part of your work, that you never seem to use? Im sure we could figure out how to use some for a trip. :-) Of course, everything is tax-deductible. NEW VERSUS USED ITEMS AND SMALLER ITEMS We SO appreciate anyone who is willing to donate any items, to help the greyhounds. However, this particular event is for new items, ONLY. We want people to be able to do a good portion of their holiday shopping at the GAO brunch. Therefore, used items, small items, knick knacks, many craft-type items, items that may be serviceable or unused, but have been around for awhile and no longer look new would all be things we could save for a future yard sale. TICKETS TO SPORTING EVENTS Are you or a friend season tickets holders with one of our wonderful Cleveland sports teams? Might there be a weekend you wont be using your tickets? Auction attendees LOVE sporting events! PLEASE HELP US BY BRINGING YOUR ITEMS TO GAO OR LETTING US NOW WHEN AND WHERE WE CAN PICK THEM UP, BEFORE SUNDAY! Although we have said that anyone who had items to donate, could bring them on Sunday, we didnt realize that nearly everyone would choose that option. Were now faced with taking in nearly all the items for the auction, on Sunday, at the brunch, which could make for a very chaotic morning. Of course, we understand that those who live a long distance away will be bringing your items on Sunday. For everyone else, if there is any way for you to drop your items off at the kennel, that would be a tremendous help! If you are unable to make it to the kennel, please let us know and well try to have your item(s) picked up. Well also be available to take your items at the Holiday Inn, in Independence, on Saturday afternoon, if that might work for you. So, there you are.... The greyhounds need us and we need you to help us continue to make it happen! Please let us know if you can help, in any way. With warmest regards and wishes for a happy, healthy (and greyhound-filled) holiday season! Linda Linda Perko President Greyhound Adoption of Ohio, Inc. Cell: 440-591-0905
