“In 2013, the UN estimated there to be about 232 million international migrants in the world. Many may be surprised to know that this number represents slightly more than 3% of the world’s population – a percentage that has remained rather steady for several decades. But if all the world’s migrants were in a single country, it would be the world’s fifth most populous country, falling between the populations of Indonesia and Brazil.” To estimate global migration and its trends is a hard job. There are many estimates but only Pew Research Center explained the main challenges in researching about world migration. Those challenges PRC put into three short chapters: 1. Migrants keep moving 2. Who is an international migrant? 3. Migrants do not always cross boundaries legally 4. Migration data is not always made public 5. Migrants don’t report where they are going or where they’ve gone As part of their results, they add those two tables: Top 10 countries of origin: R. Country - number of emigrants (in millions) 1. Mexico - 12.9 2. India - 11.8 3. Russia - 11.3 4. China - 8.4 5. Bangladesh - 6.5 6. Ukraine - 6.5 7. Palestine - 5.8 8. United Kingdom - 5.0 9. Philippines - 4.6 10. Pakistan - 4.5 Top 10 destination countries: R. Country - number of immigrants (in millions) 1. United States - 42.8 2. Russia - 12.3 3. Germany - 10.7 4. Saudi Arabia - 7.3 5. Canada - 7.2 6. France - 6.7 7. United Kingdom - 6.5 8. Spain - 6.4 9. India - 5.4 10. Ukraine - 5.3 #migrants #emigrants #immigrants #immigration #emigration #migration
