[[In his opening remarks, Mayor Mike Rawlings called on Dallas residents to think in terms of the health of all North Texas. “I believe that we live in the city of D-FW, and Dallas is a neighborhood in that city,” he said. “We have to think regionally — that as the pie gets bigger, we all benefit. What’s good for Fort Worth is good for Dallas, and what’s good for Dallas is good for Fort Worth.”] But... that isnt true. A regionalist approach has cost Dallas roughly 160,000 jobs over the last decade, while the region as a whole has boomed. Southern Dallas has actually depopulated significantly, as former residents find themselves forced to relocate closer to their places of employment. I dont know of any other North Texas cities wherein citizens are told to make sacrifices for the good of the region, why should Dallas? Regional bodies are tasked with advancing regional interests; our local political leaders need to focus on serving as advocates for the City of Dallas, just as other local leaders serve as aggressive advocates for their own municipalities interests.
