“In need of key Changes! Music for Tomorrow Facing challenges for composers today” European Symposium At the Representation of Lazio Region in Brussels It is largely understood in the field of music that “talent alone is not sufficient for the success of a professional career”. Notwithstanding the adoption of the Universal Declaration on cultural diversity by UNESCO (2001), the UNESCO Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions (2005), subsequently adopted by the European Union, the Resolution of the European Parliament on the social status of the artists (2007), the Resolution of the European Parliament on equal opportunities in the performing arts (2009) and the UN HRC Document regarding the right to freedom of artistic expression and creativity (2013), little has been achieved and to a great extent nothing changes. The status of composers, songwriters, authors and creators of music is endangered and questioned every day, whilst equal opportunities are far from being a reality. They are under threat of censorship and violation of their rights to artistic freedom, while facing increasingly difficult working conditions in order to sustain their livelihoods. Composers, songwriters and authors of music complain about: Lack of recognition of their role in culture and society, discrimination, unfair contracts, lack of equal opportunities and of transparency in decisional making processes. In order to act on this critical situation, the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica and the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA) have joined forces to face these challenges and to encourage positive ways in which composers, songwriters and authors of music can be promoted and sustained. They call upon EU decision makers to appreciate that a musical work is the result of a process of labour and judgment, necessitating years of study, intellectual reflection, apprenticeship and inspiration and that authorship is the only concept for the justification and legitimacy of copyright law. It is essential that the EU protects and enforces the author’s moral and economic rights in all environments, through a just, stable and transparent European legal framework that promotes the creative process and its exploitation providing common guidelines and best practices for music commissions particularly in the media and in TV. The Symposium “In need of Key Changes! Music for Tomorrow” will encourage the creation of a common platform, engaging Commissioners, Parliamentarians, Heads of Departments and Specialists in a discussion regarding the conditions of today’s and creators of music and the necessity to safeguard, empower and sustain their positions within European cultural heritage, for EU competitiveness as well as for the future of creativity. Speakers will be invited to comment on a draft recommendation prepared by the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica and ECSA. Their input will be reviewed by experts in a closed afternoon session. The Symposium will culminate in the presentation of the Recommendation for a Resolution to the European Institutions. 05 November 2014 – Brussels be “In need of key Changes!
