...In the Beginning... #14 White Raven bore children, sons and daughters, and her dreams continued to provide her with foretelling that guided the tribe in its choices. The fields of their home, unsullied by the white man’s wars, became playgrounds wherein could be found flowers and bees, soil and ants, air and birds. In the streams and rills they found frogs, salamanders, crayfish, dragonflies and trout. They found the sounds of life, its vast array of beauties, the throbbing of the earth’s heart. They found the forest floor running through it barefooted, and on the sheer mountainsides they found granite cliffs, climbing them even without companions. They learned the flight of the flying squirrel by running down mountains in giant strides. They learned the secret paths and ways of the bear, the deer, the hawk, and the bobcat. They learned the plants by name and, in running through them, made of them friends. But most powerfully, they found water and its melodies, harmonies and dissonances, its life, its life taking, and its life giving. And in the magical waters, Swift Otter, the eldest daughter’s true colors began to shine for those who could see such things. And they were also blues with greens, melded yet distinct. And she would sometimes feel a soft call from the earth, on the wind, in birdsong, in the rain, or from the rippling grains. It was a call of love, a call of song, a call from a great distance in time and space. Grandfather Crotalus heard it, too. But only he understood its nature. And she began to dream the connections between and among it all.
