In the East, first their god was ‘Diyo’, a word used in language older than Sanskirt, from which it became ‘Deva’ or ‘Devas’ (= Goddess of Light) and then ‘Varuna’ (= The Shining One). Note that the word ‘Diyo’ (= Oil Lamp) is also used in Sindhi. In Hindi, it is called Diyya or Deepak. In the West, Deva was slightly changed into ‘Dius’ or ‘Deus’ which means deity. Dius also stands for ‘Zeus’ for Greeks. All these words have the same root: ‘Diyo’. Even in the Arabic language the word ‘Ad-Dea’ (or Zia) means light and ‘Ad-Duha’ means dawn. Note that the Hindi festival ‘Deevali’ is called ‘Diyaari’ in Sindhi, which means ‘The Night of Lights’. The English words Divine and Divinity also have the same root.
