> Installing an algae farm along a busy highway might sound bizarre, but this thriving farm in Switzerland is actively filtering pollution from the air. As part of a recent garden festival in Geneva, the team at Cloud Collective aimed to create an algae garden which uses the highway’s excess of carbon dioxide coupled with sunlight to transform the polluted landscape into a smart space for urban farming. The system itself is simple: algae are cultivated inside tubes & a series of pumps, filters, & solar panels aid the process. Once the algae mature, they can be produced into a number of different products, including biodiesel, nutrients, medication, & cosmetics. The team hopes that the design will encourage designers to innovate by using existing infrastructures as agricultural sites. From an engineering perspective, I think this is a brilliant idea & Im not opposed to an extra touch of greenery along our oppressive networks of concrete highways. #LiveGreen
