:::Irish Literature Translation Prize Shortlist announced::: The Consulate General of Ireland is pleased to announce the shortlist for the inaugural Irish Literature Translation Prize. The Prize is organised by the Consulate General of Ireland in association with the Shanghai Book Fair, the Shanghai Review of Books (book review supplement of Oriental Morning Post) and Ireland Literature Exchange. The shortlisted entries for the Prize (in alphabetical order) are: -- The Infinities, John Banville: Professor YIN Shulin (Shanghai Translation Publishing House, 2013) -- Murphy, Samuel Beckett: Professor CAO Bo & YAO Zhong (Hunan Literature and Art Publishing House, 2012) -- Netherland, Joseph O’Neill: FANG Bolin (Shanghai 99 / People’s Literature Publishing House, 2011) -- Walk the Blue Fields, Claire Keegan: MA Ainong (Shanghai 99 / People’s Literature Publishing House, 2011) The shortlist was decided on by the independent jury for the Prize, according to criteria of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance of translation. The overall winner of the Prize will be announced at the Shanghai Book Fair on 14 August at a press event and awards ceremony at Sinan Mansions (Hotel Massenet, F/1 Ballroom, 256 South Chonqing Road, Huangpu, Shanghai) from 2-3pm. The winning translator(s) and publisher(s) will be awarded the Irish Literature Translation Prize. The translator will also receive a cash award of 17,00RMB and a bursary to travel to Ireland for one month to work on another translation by a contemporary Irish writer. While in Ireland, the translator will be hosted by Ireland Literature Exchange, the Irish state agency that supports international appreciation of Irish writing. With the announcement of the shortlist, Consul General of Ireland Austin Gormley said: “I am delighted that there were so many high standard Chinese translations of Irish literature submitted for the inaugural Irish Literature Translation Prize. The shortlist selected by the independent jury are outstanding translations of important works in contemporary Irish writing. I hope that many Chinese readers will get to enjoy the books on the shortlist and that it encourages further exploration of Irish literature and culture. I am looking forward to the announcement of the overall winner of the Prize at the Shanghai Book Fair on 14 August.”
