-It always seems impossible until it is done- Many times we waste precious energy and resources worrying, complaining, stressing and focusing on why something won’t work or why is it too difficult. Instead focus your energy on solving the problem, overcoming the obstacle and completing the task. To quote NIKE – “Just Do It!” Some tips for completing an overwhelming task- 1. STOP STRESSING AND WORRYING. That never helps and usually hurts the progress of completing the project. 2. Get organized. Organize your office or work area so everything is in its place. It is helpful to get a birds eye view of what needs to get done. 3. Break the job / project down into smaller pieces – Remember this : How do you eat an elephant? - One bite at a time. 4. Organize and prioritize the pieces and create an action plan for the order in which you are going to attack the tasks. 1st, 2nd , 3rd, ect. Do one thing at a time and do it right. Jumping from one thing to the next with no roadmap and having many tasks started but not finished is counterproductive and leads to mistakes on everything. 5. Be flexible – if you have items prioritized and the order needs to change because of new information or a directive from above – stop and re-organize / re-order the tasks.-don’t throw your hands up and go back to randomly jumping from one thing to the next. 6. FOCUS. Certain things need absolute focus. Without quiet uninterrupted time an item that may take an hour will take 3 hours. Close your door/ turn off your phone and have private time for an hour at a time. Once the hour is up – deal with anything that came up while you were off limits. 7. Learn how to say no – or at least not right now. We are a team and here to help but people cannot be productive if they are interrupted every 5 minutes. If somebody needs help, they may need to wait until you get to a point where you can take a break or are in between task for you to give them some time. Do not get bogged down in OPP – Other people’s problems. Of course there are times when the other person has an emergency and needs you NOW. See number 5 above – Be Flexible. 8. STOP STRESSING AND WORRYING. Yes – I listed it twice because it is that important. When you feel overwhelmed it is your brain playing a trick on you. Remember you are the master and your brain is the servant – not the other way around. Your brain can’t tell you how to feel. Stop – take a deep breath – know in your heart and mind that you are a smart, capable, talented, trained, and capable professional who can get it done. Stop saying “I can’t” or “this is impossible“ or “this sucks” or “this is ridiculous” or “I can’t take this anymore”. These statements take hold of you and you start to live up to them. Instead say out loud with a smile on your face – “I can do this”. “It’s a good thing I am so freaking good at my job”. “ I am a machine” “I am going to chop this up and eat it for breakfast” “ I am the best there is and I am about to prove it” This works just as well for our field staff as it does for our office staff. Have a great day and BE PROUD TO BE E!
