“It is the LORD who marches before you; he will be with you and will never fail you or forsake you. So do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8) It was a forty year hard lesson. When Moses, Caleb, and Joshua encouraged the people to go across the Jordan, conquer the giants, and take the land, the people choose despair and never saw the fruit of the inheritance. Yet, I can’t be too hard on them. When a big bill comes, I panic and curse under my breath. When I’m in a situation I don’t like, I assume that God had left me and I feel sorry for myself. When a temptation comes, I think the only option is to crumble and give in. But never have I been forsaken. I’m still alive. I’m still eating. I still have a place to sleep. I still have friends. Perhaps this is the child’s humility Jesus was talking about (Matthew 18:4). They follow their parents confidently believing and trusting that mom and dad will guide, provide and protect. So should we as the Lord marches before us.
