“It is these you ought to have practiced, without neglecting the others” (Lk 11:42) Jesus wants all of us to be perfect, as his Father in heaven is perfect. In today’s Gospel he clearly tells the Pharisees to give top priority to “justice and the love of God”. However, Jesus did not come to break the law but to keep the law in its fullness. If he had come to overturn the law, he would have said that we need only love God and be just in our dealings, and need not bother about rituals and other religious duties like giving of tithes. But he specifically adds, “without neglecting the others” meaning we must also observe religious practices and customs. If we look at the people in our own parish we might find three types of Christians. 1. Those who practice only rituals and customs while neglecting love and justice. 2. Those who get very involved in fighting for justice and keep busy in charitable service to the less fortunate, while neglecting other observances, customs and prayers which may even include Mass, rosary and other devotions. 3. Those who keep a balance between their devotions, customs and prayers, while fighting for justice and offering love and services to the poor and less fortunate people. In which category do I fall? My heavenly Father wants me to be perfect. FRUIT: Today can we decide how to strike a balance between religious observance and serving others.
