It may have one of the highest birthrates in the country but Slough has been voted the least romantic location in Britain according to this story that first appeared in Metro. The Thames Valley town, famous for its vast industrial estates and the ‘Slough (sewage) stench`, has replaced Scunthorpe at the top of the ‘undesirables` list. As well as being derided by comic Jimmy Carr, who grew up in Slough, it was also lambasted in the 1930s by poet Sir John Betjeman, who wrote: `Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough; It isn`t fit for humans now.` Unsurprisingly Slough Borough Council is not too impressed with its latest label, awarded following a survey of 2,000 people by Hotels. A spokeswoman for the local authority said: ‘Slough is not your traditional tourist area but more companies have their corporate headquarters here than anywhere else except London and it is in the workplace where many people meet their future spouse.` After Scunthorpe, which was relegated to No.2 in the charts, came much maligned Birmingham. The Lake District was named the most romantic spot followed by the Cotswolds, London and Cornwall. ‘Love it or loathe it` London made it into both lists. Top ten most-romantic destinations in Britain: 1. Lake District 2. Cotswolds 3. London 4. Cornwall 5. Stratford-upon-Avon 6. York 7. Edinburgh 8. Bath 9. Isle of Wight 10.
