“It was as if someone hit me on the side of the head.” Have you ever felt like that when you suddenly got the point? I know I have—and maybe after a few “hits”! It is encouraging for us to read in Acts 11:1-18 that Peter had such an experience. Peter couldn’t tolerate the idea that the Jews (his own people) and the Gentiles would be equally welcomed into the community formed by Jesus. It was just too much for him to swallow (Peter’s conversion was definitely a work in progress!) So here in Acts Peter has a vision and comes out not only accepting the inclusion but defending it and advocating for it before others with similar ideas. God works like that! Sometimes you and I have to handle difficult situations about inclusion. Pope Francis is constantly reminding us of how embracing we should be. Of course we don’t always see eye to eye as to how we should include but we must imitate Peter in taking such matters to prayer. Does any of this apply to you? Are there specific challenges you may be having about your own feeling of inclusion or the inclusion of others. Where do you stand in prayer? Share if you are comfortable in doing so. -- Msgr.
