Its a recurring trope of bourgeois journalism that when a government is floundering, everyone thinks its helpful to write a resurrection scenario for them along these lines, What Mr Howard/Mr Rudd/Ms Gillard - now Mr Abbott - should do is redefine the narrative, talk from the heart, get back to core values, and so on, blah, blah, blah. The outcome of this gratuitous, disingenuous, but no doubt well-meant advice, is that the target of it never does do that redefining thing and instead continues flailing around, failing, blundering and going from bad to worse. Look at the history of the names given above for proof that well-meaning words about re-branding yourself is always too little too late.
