@ Jazztopad Festival 2013 14th - 24th November 2013 | Wrocław 10th Anniversary Edition of the Jazztopad Festival In previous editions of the festival, our goal has been to set a standard for the Jazztopad audience featuring concerts at the highest level, and to convince our listeners that they deserve better than a program assembled from musicians who just happen to be touring nearby. Those who have been with us for the past few years know very well, how important it is for subsequent editions of Jazztopad to include unique concerts and premieres of new compositions. We are aware that by having invited Sonny Rollins two years ago and Jack DeJohnette last year, we set the bar high. Still, even in 2011 when sounds of Rollins’ rampant saxophone improvisations were flowing across the Wrocław Philharmonic stage, , we knew we had two years to prepare something completely unique this time around – after all, you only celebrate your tenth birthday once. This is why Jazztopad’s anniversary edition will open on Thursday, November 14 with the revered Wayne Shorter Quartet, a group the majority of jazz enthusiasts consider to be the best and most creative ensemble performing today. a concert of a quartet a majority of jazz enthusiasts consider the most interesting improvising jazz band in the world, namely the Wayne Shorter Quartet. The members of the group – Wayne Shorter, Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade treat each show as a certain humanistic ritual and a therapy session at the same time; those who have seen the quartet live know that their music can change one’s perception of their surroundings. The following day, November 15, we have planned the first premiere in this edition of the festival: the William Parker Trio with the Wrocław Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Jan Jakub Bokun will perform Parker’s piece entitled Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still. According to many, William Parker is a central figure of the top free jazz rhythm section players in the world, an artist who for the past thirty years has been the central figure of the New York scene, famous for his incredible charisma and improvisations, captivating listeners like best-told stories. Jazztopad’s audience will have the exciting opportunity to get to know him as a composer. On Saturday, November 16, we will enjoy a second evening filled with new compositions. First, the New York composer and cellist Christopher Hoffman, accompanied by the Polish Cello Quartet, will present the piece Spirit Suspensions for cello quintet. The second premiere of the evening will be compositions by saxophonist Tony Malaby for saxophone and cello quartet, also performed with the participation of the Polish Cello Quartet. The second part of the concert will belong to Tony Malaby’s TubaCello Quartet in which its leader and Christopher Hoffman are accompanied by Dan Peck (tuba) and John Hollenbeck (drums). On November 17 (Sunday), the White Stork Synagogue will welcome a musician who was born near the church of St. Thomas in Leipzig, and who does not hide his connections to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Regardless of his huge horizons, Joachim Kühn is above all a prominent jazz player. He was one of the only two pianists accepted to perform with Ornette Coleman and one ofa handful of Europeans who managed to release an album with the legendary Impulse label. In Wrocław, Kühn will play with his excellent trio of Majid Bekkas and Ramon Lopez, in which he combines jazz with Arab and African music in a truly unprecedented way. Jazztopad would not be the festival we all know without international artistic collaborations. As in previous years, we will witness the performances of musicians from the JazzPlaysEurope platform and Take Five: Europe project. On November 21, we will initiate the Melting Pot Made in Wrocław, a laboratory of improvisation prepared for the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. The lab will join European artists representing Jazztopad and its partner organizations – JazzWerkRuhr, 12 Points / Improvised Music and Swinging Europe. The following days of the festival are going to be centered around Asia.On Friday, November 22 we begin at the synagogue with a concert of the Chiri Trio: Bae Il Dong – the master of the Korean pansori operatic tradition, trumpeter Scott Tinkler and drummer Simon Barker. Friday and Saturday (November 22-23) are the Japanese days at Jaztopad. The artists invited to Wrocław who perform under the name Tokyo Jazz Festival presents: JAPAN include the Deluxe Trio of Michiyo Yagi, a koto virtuoso known for her work with John Zorn, Peter Brötzmann and Elliott Sharp. An outstanding instrumentalist, Michiyo Yagi combines the sound of the traditional Japanese instrument with the most intriguing elements of American and European improvised music. In Wrocław we will also see Quasimode, a quartet that enjoys a well-deserved reputation in Japan. Their albums (including 6 studio and 2 live albums since their debut in 2006) often occupy top spots onbestseller lists. Melodic, pulsating with dance-likeenergy, full-bodied jazz from the Land of the Rising Sun. The Japanese jazz scene has a reputation of being very colorful and diverse, and we fully intend to present a wide-ranging spectrum of events that feature Japanese artists. We will soon provide information about new guests from Japan, and will additionally announce the names of outstanding Polish improvisers who will perform in the Polish Jazz Showcase on November 21 and 22. The grand finale of the tenth edition falls on Sunday, November 24. Charles Lloyd is the saxophonist who discovered Keith Jarrett and became one of the godfathers of the jazz-rock revolution. Lloyd is a mystic, who escaped the drug-filled world of jazz in search of his true self. At the same time, he is a music giant, who returned to the stage after many years of meditation in the California mountains, only to once again impress audiences with one of the most remarkable voices known in contemporary jazz. The international group of Charles Lloyd will perform in the Wrocław Philharmonic Hall with compositions written exclusively for Jazztopad. So there you have it – the highlights of the 10th anniversary edition of the Jazztopad Festival. Do not forget that the uniqueness of Jazztopad is determined not only by its main events; the festival’s unusual projects and ideas have been equally interesting and successful. Some fondly recall, for instance, the mini-concerts held in private homes. This year, additional events will be presented to stimulate your senses and offer a new approach to listening to jazz – these include jazz film screenings at the New Horizons Cinema and compelling live shows in complete darkness. More details – soon. Keep on swingin’! jazztopad.pl
