Join us as we continue to examine Equity and Ethics in the U.S. Medical System! My guest this week on Information is the Best Medicine is Dr. John Hoberman, author of Black and Blue: The Origins and Consequences of Medical Racism. The first part of the book’s title, Black and Blue, suggests that we, African Americans, have been beaten up along the way or perhaps have just suffered a great deal over the years in seeking equal medical care in this country. Disparities in health and mental health status are prevalent in the United States. Black people die sooner and live sicker than their white counterparts. In recent literature, these disparities have been associated with disproportionate exposure to the social determinants of health that include poverty, racial discrimination, unsafe and unhealthful living environments, limited educational opportunities, and misguided social policies. Black & Blue is the first systematic description of how American doctors think about racial differences and how this kind of thinking affects the treatment of their black patients. Be sure to tell someone whose health you care about to tune in! If its Saturday, remember 9:00am on 900AM...
