【Joshi-Tabi (女子旅) - Girls’ Travel】 Dare to try Shizuoka oden? During the cold months, many Japanese get a craving for oden: a Japanese hot pot dish with a wide variety of ingredients such as eggs, fish cakes, seaweed and radishes, cooked in a soy sauce-based broth. Some might say oden is a slow-cooked version of Yong Tau Foo, but despite any similarities with the Singaporean dish, oden also differs in many ways. Unlike Yong Tau Foo, oden is often served with fish flakes and seaweed powder sprinkled on top, and is skewered for easy eating. Shizuoka style oden also distinguishes itself for having a dark colour, with some ingredients even being completely black! If you have a chance to visit Shizuoka, don’t be afraid to try this unique dish at an authentic store like Mikawaya. You might be pleasantly surprised by how good it is! #oden #shizuoka #joshitabi #girlstravel Mikawaya Hours: 5pm–10pm Closed: Sundays, and the 2nd and 3rd Monday of each month Access: A 15-min walk from JR Shizuoka Station (JR Tokaido Main Line) Address: Tokiwacho, 1-8-7 Aoba Yokocho, Aoi, Shizuoka URL: www106.sakura.ne.jp/~mikawaya/index.htm (Japanese) Photo credit: Shizuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau
