#KARIMGANJ: The Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan has launched a ‘come-close-to- people’ programme throughout the valley to mobilise public opinion in favour of its demand for creating an autonomous economical development council for the Barak Valley. The decision to start the campaign was adopted in the meeting of the multilingual coordination committee convention held here recently. In the convention, a concept paper on the autonomous economical development council was placed. The concept paper will be forwarded to the MPs, MLAs and ministers. Besides, it will be sent to the Chief Minister and other public representatives. After having their opinions, the concept paper may be rectified. This was disclosed by the central committee general secretary, Gautam Prasad Dutta. An urgent meeting of the executive committee of the Barak Banga was held at the Silchar Banga Bhawan recently with the central committee president, Nitish Bhattacharjee, in the chair. The meeting stressed the need to intensify the demand for an autonomous economical development council. It may be recalled that the Barak Banga had first raised the demand in 2005, but following some reasons, the demand could not gain momentum. The Barak Banga had raised the demand after holding discussions with various tribal organisations. The Barak Valley autonomous economic council will surely solve the problems of various tribal people, said Gautam Prasad Dutta. Dutta further said that on April 25, representatives of the Barak Banga met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Dispur and placed a written demand before him. In reply, the Chief Minister assured the Barak Banga that he would consider the demand. To create pressure on the State Government, the Barak Banga has taken the decision to commence the current programme. With a view to giving final touches to the concept paper, a conveners’ committee has been formed with Sanjeev Deb Laskar as the chairman.
