::: KEARNS CALL FOR GPS REVIEW AFTER FARCICAL WIN ::: Around this time last year we brought you the story of brewing discontent surrounding the win-at-all costs mentality at some GPS schools. That story was triggered by a never-before-seen boycott by some Sydney schools of the local GPS basketball competition, which had been dominated by Scots College that year. In the ensuing fall out, the extraordinary sporting recruitment processes of some colleges were unveiled and scrutinised, with some of Sydneys top schools coming under fire for their ruthless approach. And it wasnt long before many observed the flow-on effect and potential negative impacts in other sports including Rugby. Twelve months later and two rugby heavy-weights have added their voice and re-ignited the debate, following Scots Colleges recent 101-0 defeat of Newington in the GPS 1st XV rugby clash over the weekend. So great was the score apparently, the Scots College score board didnt have enough room or digits to track it. NSWRU Chairman Nick Farr Jones and former Wallaby Phil Kearns have expressed their concern that the result seriously undermines the integrity of the game at the schoolboy level and potentially puts player safety at risk. They have called for a review of the GPS schools sports recruitment process, including the use of financial incentives and scholarships. Farr-Jones had also opened up the possibility of capping the number of scholarship players a school can field at any one time in an effort to even out the competition. No doubt the debate will be waged for a while yet, but it also raises some serious talking points about rugby at a more senior level too. Dare we say it but some of the parallels certainly have a very familiar ring to it.
