#KENYA #NAIROBI #KOT STATEMENT ON PROPOSED DEMONSTRATION BY THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI STUDENTS PLANNED FOR 26th JANUARY 2015 The attention of the Government has been called to a message circulating in the social media, purportedly from the leadership of the University of Nairobi students that threatens the public and incites the students to blockade roads, engage with the police and shut the city of Nairobi down tomorrow. While the laws of Kenya guarantee the right to picket and demonstrate, this right must be exercised within the confines of the law and without infringing on the rights of any other person. This right can also not be invoked as an excuse to destroy property or attack any Kenyan or guest within the Republic of Kenya. The Government calls on all persons that have business to transact in the city of Nairobi to be assured of their security and protection, as guaranteed in our policy and legal frameworks. Everyone should go on with their businesses normally without any fear of attack or intimidation. At the same time, this message is intended to serve a STRONG warning to any person or persons that may have an intention to blockade any road, attack any person or destroy property. We are particularly dismayed at the contemplation of the attack and engagement with the security officers. Any such acts will be dealt with swiftly and firmly. Further, I wish to inform Kenyans that investigations are underway to determine the origin of the said messages and take necessary action. Hon. Maj. Gen. Joseph Nkaisserry Cabinet Secretary, Interior and Coordination of National Government
