(Karn) Duel Decks Anthology is a compilation collectors set that was released yesterday and goes for $99 MSRP. I decided to take a quick financial look and break down the cards and see what value we really have. I took a listing of all 300 cards and entered them into TCGPlayers Mass Card Entry. I tried to optimize the cart but I think there was too many cards for it to do and it didnt do anything (or its broken). These prices may not be the lowest, but they are pretty darn close. Here are all the cards above $1: 1 Demonic Tutor $12.71 1 Jace Beleren $7.19 1 Garruk Wildspeaker $6.87 1 Akroma, Angel of Wrath $5.99 1 Ancestral Vision $5.76 1 Liliana Vess $5.37 1 Chandra Nalaar $3.35 1 Daze $2.72 1 Wirewood Symbiote $2.39 1 Elvish Promenade $2.22 1 Goblin Warchief $1.79 1 Goblin Ringleader $1.74 1 Elvish Harbinger $1.49 1 Siege-Gang Commander $1.36 1 Wirewood Lodge $1.34 2 Rancor $1.30/each $2.60 1 Ambush Commander $1.25 2 Imperious Perfect $1.23/each $2.46 1 Heedless One $1.18 1 Terrain Generator $1.07 Our biggest value is Demonic Tutor at about $13. Now this card varies depending on what version so youre looking at $12 - $20 for this card. Its possible this card could take a slight hit in price with this release depending if this is a limited release or not but doubtful itll be anything over $1. And besides its the first time Demonic Tutor will be printed in post M15 borders so that will hold value on that alone. I speculate this card will settle in the $18 range. Second we have the planeswalker card Jace Beleren. This card was printed in Lorwyn and reprinted in M10 and M11. Not including the promo cards its a $7-$9 card. I would suspect the Duels Deck version will hold around the same value but again being in a new border might bring a small bit of extra value to it but I wouldnt put it past Wizards to reprint this at some point. I speculate this card will settle at $8. And then we come up to our second planeswalker card and the third most expensive in this set. Garruk Wildspeaker is also a $7-$9 card only recently seeing a price increase when Born of the Gods was released. This too was originally printed in Lorwyn and reprinted in M10, M11 and Commander. This is another card that has potential for another reprint at some point so I wouldnt see this card going any higher then $7. I speculate this card will settle around $7. Akroma, Angel of Wrath was originally printed way in Legions and had a reprint in Timeshifted. The card has had a steady decline in price since M15 currently sitting at $4-$7 depending on condition. This reprint will not have much effect on the card and if anything will probably see a slight decrease in value over time. Again, with the new border though this might give it a very slight increase but doubtful. I speculate this card will settle around $5. And lastly, we have Ancestral Vision. This card was only printed in Time Spiral (obviously not including the Duel Decks versions). Currently sitting between $5-$8. The card has had a small decline in popularity since Khans came out with Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time dropping its price about $0.50 since that set was released. Doubtful this card will make much of a bounce back in the future and its possible well see a reprint at some point. Id speculate this card will settle at about $7. When you add up the cost of all the cards youre looking at about $105-$110 for all the cards (not including shipping charges). The product is definitely unique and a nice thing to have to say put in your board game collection and have available to pull out when company is over and you want to play a game or two of MTG. It also holds a collectors value that the box is very sturdy, comes with nice boxes to hold the decks and life counters. But value of the cards dont not hold well. Its not something you would go out and buy four of, stick in a closet for a few years and then pull it back out to sell for a profit. The cards dont have extreme value that itll gain much value. The only thing I can say might hold for its value is the new card frames. But this really only pertains to the players building cubes or trying to pimp out commander or legacy decks. All-in-all, its a fine product for the casual player. Someone who might pull it out at gatherings and play with family and friends who dont play as much. It can also be a good gift for that special MTG player in your life as it is still a limited product and as a whole adds value as a resell in the future, but not much. Let us know what you think.
