#KidsHealth: CROUP in Children #Croup is a viral #infection of the voice box (larynx) and windpipe (trachea). It usually affects children up to 5 years of age. Croup often begins like a normal cold followed by a harsh, barking cough, described as “croupy”. Croup may last for 3-4 days. Some children have repeated attacks of croup. There is no way of preventing croup as it is caused by a number of viruses. There is no specific treatment for croup. It will usually get better over 3-4 days. Antibiotics do not help as croup is caused by a viral infection. Care at Home: • Stay calm • If your child has a fever and is irritable give paracetamol (e.g., Panadol, Calpol). • Encourage fluids. • A mild attack of croup will sometimes settle by nursing your child in a warm, moist room. • Some parents find it helpful to take their child into the bathroom, and turn the hot water tap on to let the room warm and steam up. (Do not leave your child alone in the bathroom with the hot water tap on). • Your child may also breathe more easily if they are sitting up or lying against 2-3 pillows for support. (Do not leave an infant under 2 years unsupervised with pillows).
