“Kinship” Recently I saw the movie “Aurangzeb” on the TV premiere as I hardly go out and watch a movie in the theatre .Ravikant Phogat ,the corrupt DCP played very effectively by Rishi Kapoor, has a few thing about life and system .While explaining about his take on ….life…he quote Aurangzeb, the last independent Mughal Emperor , saying ”Kinship knows no kinship”.I am yet to verify the veracity of the quote but certainly a dangerous thought . Rivalry amongst kinsfolk/kinsman or sibling rivalry is not new and power & money had always added a complex dimension to it. So ruling class were the most effected by it in the older days. As power no longer remain a family fiefdom so it shifted to money/wealth. A third dimension which had always had played a role is intolerance. Intolerance is as deadly as the lust for power or wealth. The intolerance is the intolerance of one man for the other or one kinsman for the other and certainly intolerance is equally a strong force like wealth and power. The more intolerant is one of the other the more severe is the fight. The much publicized affair of Ambani brothers and the latest one of Ponty Singh shows the ugly side of the sibling rivalry and intolerance. Everybody including me has our share of the devils play. This reminded me a story( a real incident ) recounted by my grand mother , a beautiful woman who had no formal education but had her value system in place .The story is about a business family , jewelers , very prosperous but nonetheless cultured . The two scion of the family had excellent relationship but at certain point a rift occurred between the two .So strong was the intolerance that it could not be sorted out in family intervention and ultimately the matter went up to high court. Eighty –ninety years back court were not this modern AC court houses and the litigant or spectator used to enter the court room bare footed keeping the shoes outside. So ,on a given date the elder brother had gone inside the court keeping his shoes outside and then it started raining. At this point the younger brother came to the court and identifying his brother shoes , which were just about to be soaked, picked it up and took it to a safe and distant place where rain water were not falling and by a coincidence the elder brother came out of the court room and saw what the younger one was doing. He stood there for a minute and then called his brother ,huged him and conveyed the idea that he had decided to withdraw the case. To understand finer points one need maturity and culture. Unfortunately rat race is prompting people to be intolerant rather than the other way round. At times I wish people were just a little more tolerant and a bit less successful
