LEE JACOBS WINS UNOH ALL STAR MAIN IN FRONT OF FAMILY & FRIENDS; BERNER & GARDNER SCORE NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY WINS By Brian Liskai ORRVILLE, Ohio (Saturday, May 31, 2014) – Three weeks ago Lee Jacobs drove to his first ever University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions feature win. While that was special, something was missing….his family. On Saturday, the Dalton, Ohio driver scored his second career UNOH All Star win and this time it was in front of ALL his family and friends. Jacobs led all 30 laps at the NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway – the track his great-grandfather built nearly 50 years ago. Lee’s dad, Kenny, is a four time All Star champion and is second on the series’ all time win list with 98 victories, and was there to greet his son in victory lane. “This means an absolute lot to me. My great-grandpa’s race track…my dad finally here to see one and my wife and my oldest son …this is unbelievable. To do it here at Wayne County Speedway…all these great fans here tonight…unbelievable,” said an emotional Jacobs beside his Simcox Grinding and Steel/Crown Investments/Leaf Tree Service/OC Shocks/HP Engines/Fire and Ice Pub backed #81. “I was getting through lapped cars really good but my cousin Cody (Jacobs) did one hell of a job tonight giving me a race car that could go anywhere,” continued Lee. “I have to thank the entire Lewis family for everything they have given me. They believed in me and put me in this race car and they got my cousin Cody to come and right now we’re on a roll…we’re running really good,” concluded Lee. West Salem, Ohio’s Andrew Palker, who won the last two track championships at NAPA Wayne County Speedway, has been struggling in his first year travelling with the UNOH All Stars. A solid second place finish was just what the doctor ordered for the young team. “Lapped cars did a good job of holding their line so we had a decent chance of catching back up to Lee but he was good in clean air. We couldn’t get a really good run and we didn’t need that red (on lap 7),” said Palker beside his Albreight Trucking/Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products/King Inspection/Black Bart Lures backed #57x. “I hope this gives us some momentum. Things are rolling pretty good tonight and hopefully we can keep that going,” added Palker. Three weeks ago, Jac Haudenschild finished second to Lee at Lernerville and would win the All Star event the next night at Mercer Raceway while Lee Jacobs finished second. A close family friend of the Jacobs, Jac was not only happy with his third place finish Saturday, but for Lee’s victory. “Me and Kenny grew up racing the All Stars and the Outlaws together and our kids played together and now we’re out here racing each other. Lee’s doing great he’s a really good driver and you don’t have to worry about racing beside him,” said Haudenschild beside his Mondak Portables/Rick Rogers Construction/Triple X Racing/Renegade Rentals backed #9w. “I’m so glad to be in the Rick Rogers car all year. We’ve been doing a lot of racing and it’s been great. We’ve got Scott Benic working on the car…we’ve been up and down but we’re getting better every week and it’s always a lot of fun racing here,” added Haudenschild. Jacobs and Palker would bring the field to the green for the 30-lap feature but before a lap could be completed Shawn Hubler suffered a flat tire and brought out the caution. On the ensuing restart Jacobs would grab the lead over Palker, Chad Kemenah, Haudenschild and Rob Chaney. Haudenschild would move into third a lap later. Jacobs and Palker ran nose to tail as they quickly caught the back of the pack by lap 6 when the caution flew for a slowing Jordan Harble. On the restart Jacobs would lead Palker, Haudenschild, Chaney, Kemenah, Caleb Helms, Dale Blaney, Dean Jacobs, Sheldon Haudenschild, Danny Holtgraver and Tim Shaffer. The action would grind to a halt a lap later when Harble tumbled in turn three – he was uninjured. This would necessitate an open red for fueling. When the race resumed it would go green the rest of the way. Within five laps of going back to green the leaders again found heavy lapped traffic which allowed Palker to stay close to Jacobs as Haudenschild closed. Jacobs sliced his way through the traffic like a surgeon with Palker and Haudenschild staying within striking distance. With five laps to go in a rapidly moving race, Jacobs led Palker, Haudenschild, Chaney, Helms, Holtgraver and Blaney. Palker got close to Jacobs with three to go, but once clear of traffic, Jacobs drove to the win over Palker, Haudenschild, Chaney and Helms. Jacobs becomes the first repeat winner with the UNOH All Stars in 2014 out of 10 events. The UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions will be back in action June 7th at the Butler Speedway in Quincy, Michigan before a trip east to New York and Pennsylvania. For more information go to allstarsprint Millersburg’s Keith Berner grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag in the Lias Tire Late Model feature and lead all the way aboard the Bud’s Place, Village Motors and Accu-Force Shock Dynos #18 for his first win of the season. The near capacity crowd was treated to a great five car batle for second all race long as Doug Drown, Charlie Duncan, points leader Ryan Markham, Brad Malcuit and Rocky Owens changed positions on every lap, at times three wide. before finishing in that order. Duncan and Malcuit went back and forth early in the race for second with Drown , Markham and Owens right behind. With ten laps to go Drown moved past Malcuit for second as Berner was driving away out front. Drown motored past Duncan for second with five to go to clinch second as Markham grabbed fourth from Malcuit with two circuits to go. Fast Qualifier Drown and Markham topped the heats. For the second week in a row, Brandon Gardner of Miamisburg parked his Schaffer Oil, Rowtec and GLR #27G in victory lane on White’s Maibach Ford night. Fast Qualifier Bob Daugherty put early pressure on Gardner but dropped out of the Thrifty Muffler Super Stock feature on lap seven. Nick Smith was on the tail of the two leaders but he also exited from the race one lap later. A caution on lap 14 of the 15 lap event bunched the field together and Gardner would stave off a last lap run by Mitch Caskey to clinch the win. Paul McVicker, Tyler Nicely and Paul Holmes would round out the top five. Gardner and Larry Baldwin posted the heat wins. Eight Vintage race cars were on hand and performed a couple of times. They included a 1949 Sprint car, a 1937 Ford Coupe that was the 1955 Butler Speedway in Michigan track champion car that was found in 2003 after being in storage for 45 years, a 1942 Chevy Coupe, a 1984 Osborn chassis that Fred Linder drove to the 1984 All Star Championship and the Knoll Bros.1963 Roadster, the last offset roadster to win a feature at Fremont Speedway back on June 17, 1972. Next Saturday Night at NAPA Wayne County Speedway, the Thrifty Muffler Super Stocks will run double features and if one driver can win both features, he will pick up a bonus of $1,000, The Sprints, Late Models, Mini Stocks and Mini Wedges will all be in action as the drivers will be racing for more Contingency Connection Awards that feature more than $2,000 in weekly prizes from national manufacturers.
