==================Lastest Update with Funeral Arrangements.=============== George Dexter a Second World War vet who incredibly survived after both his ship and the rescue vessel that saved him were sunk by the Germans has died aged 97. He passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He died at John Taylor Hospice, Erdington. He was the last living survivor of a Luftwaffe raid on evacuation ships SS Slamat and HS Diamond – an attack that claimed 843 lives. HMS Wryneck, the small boat that plucked him from the churning water, was also destroyed. He was serving with the 308 Company of the Royal Army Service Corps at the time. . George is a hero, and the Dutch wanted to make a film about him a few years ago, he was the sole survivor of the HMS Wryneck and the Dutch SS Slamat. George was picked up by both when returning from Greece Relative Ann Barrett, who lives in Scotland, said: “We think George would have wanted a military funeral because the highlight of his life was his time in the army”. His funeral will be held at 14:30 Friday 25th July at Yardley Crematorium, Yardley Road, South Yardley, Birmingham, B25 8NA.Tel: 0121 675 8825.
