#Leadership - Leaders define the boundaries of the organization / system. LODD is most certainly one of those boundaries. Just remember for many years some cultures believed that storks delivered babies.... What a tragic couple of weeks! Step up Chiefs and Administrators, lets get our heads out of the sand so to speak. There are so many critical variables to MANAGE and it is not easy. This author believes the highest level of control is self-control. The national standard will not create the performance capability we require to break this 100 firefighter LODD per year level of variance. Each department is the primary critical system inside its community and its communitys needs and risk. If you cannot learn, resource and train to a performance level that you witness by some other organization, it is foolery to expect the desired performance level from your organization. If your crews do not advance hose lines without issues, probably holding a new 4 hour class on fire ground BEHAVIOR will probably not prevent your next firefighter injury or death. We are not the same, even though we desire to take the variance from our Book belief we should be? We can learn from each other, but it is madness to mandate variance! If you cant count it, you cant measure it, If you cant measure it, you cant manage it, If you cant manage it , you cant IMPROVE it, If you cant improve it, it will eventually hurt you! We have this large professional buffet without nutrition! We operate in companies or crews and we learn in an individual skill focused and certification system and often with a stand in partner for competency with no further tests? We mandate liabilities in training, and dont in operations? We allow complacency and encourage legend over science. We believe that moral judgements can be manage in consensus forums? We dont allow innovation because we have removed all trustworthiness from our management teams. Liability drives complacency and the belief that at least it is not worse. We let poor leaders stay poor leaders. We debate what is a great leader without any mandates and or accountability short of legal ones to convict their behavior. One of the problems with this old geezer (me) is that life has had the nerve to run out of time on me and quite frankly, I have made a mess of it! Many leaders are false prophets and great sales persons lacking character, servant-hood, and humility. Bottom line, it is not OK to die in a stupid way! We as leaders are accountable for every stupid Line of Duty Death! Lets begin to put first things first. Lets match our capability with our resources, time and talents. Lets place a higher worth on science over our own selfish desires and sometime emotional desires. Lets stop overloading job skills because we cant afford them. Lets manage our emergency response to our own capabilities and constantly seek to measure and improve using in process measures that are correlative to our desired outcomes. Lets change some leaders out on a regular basis, it is like fresh fish, it is only good for a short season most of the time. Lets let our customers be stupid without our service joining them! Lets add to our certification model a method to check for competency at the department level. Lets value our firefighters like the true gold they really are! Thanks for bearing with an old geezers lamentations. Be safe, JS 2014
