...Let us back to the week before ISIS’s capture of Mosul when some things of concern to Turkey happened. In brief: 1. US President Obama set up a $5 billion fund to fight extremists. That was mainly to be diverted to countries hosting Syrian refugees and trying to deal with “terrorists” on their borders such as Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. 2. Turkey declared al-Nusra a terrorist organization. 3. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis J. Ricciardone, Jr. reported on national security collaboration between Turkey and the USA, especially regarding Syria. 4. Iranian President Rouhani came to Ankara. Everything began with a summit between Turkish and U.S. intelligence in February. Various conditions were imposed on the checking of crossings from the Syrian border and al-Nusra was declared as a terror organization . Turkey’s “open door” policy toward Syrian refugees documented the lack of security along the 911-km Syrian border. According to Turkish writer Murat Yetkin, after this summit, information about the possibility of militants crossing the border began to be given to Turkish Intelligence by Western Intelligence agencies and efforts began to stop militants from crossing.1..
