• Linebackers Curt Maggitt and Justin King were in in no-contact jerseys. Receiver Pig Howard and safety Brian Randolph were also in no contact jerseys. • Tight end Alex Ellis, defensive back Michael Williams, freshman wideout Ryan Jenkins, freshman offensive lineman Dylan Wiesman and running back Marlin Lane were sanctioned to “The Hole,” not participating in practice, rather performing tedious calisthenics and stretches. • Wiesman was helped off the turf in Neyland Stadium yesterday during the Vols’ open practice with a leg injury. Today, Wiesman was dressed with a wrap and large brace on his left knee. He walked gingerly today. From the offensive side… • Freshman WR Josh Smith was the target of much criticism. During quarterback and receiver drills on air, Smith was called out by Jones for not getting out of his stance quick enough. On Smith’s next rep, receivers coach Zach Azzanni yelled at the youngster for not getting his hands in front of him, instead pinning the ball against his chest plate. Azzanni once more yelled at Smith when receivers and cornerbacks broke for one-one-one blocking drills. Smith was not getting his head up field while engaged with defensive backs, allowing defenders to cross his face. • From the limited offensive skeleton work (plays on air) we saw, freshman receiver Marquez North carried the ball twice on end around reverses. • Tiny Richardson was limited in practice, making a trip to “The Hole” to work with a stationary rope. He did not do lateral stretching during team warm-ups. From the defensive side… • Jacques Smith did not dress in pads. He wore a cast on his hand, but did participate in team stretching and agility work. • Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Trevarris Saulsberry continues to battle shoulder injuries and was examined by the medical staff. From special teams… • Jones stopped the punt team session multiple times to get in the ear of redshirt junior punter Matt Darr. Darr had two punts blocked and shanked multiple others. From what we could see, his longest punt was a mere 32 yards. Jones’ messages weren’t so friendly, ranging from, “I’m about to send you home, Darr,” to, “Too slow, Darr. You must have had a heck of a night on the Strip.” • For what it’s worth, Jones also used his rant on Darr to remind the team about its policy of “no bars during season.” • The punt team lined up with three up-backs and lineman had wide splits of three-yards or more at times. The first team up-backs were Josh Stocstill, Mack Crowder and Greg King. Saulsberry is normally in that up-back rotation, but did not participate due to injury. • Three of the five Vols fielding punts were defensive players. Devrin Young and Alton Howard were the only white shirts.
