* MAAJHA KAUR - LOST A HUSBAND AND FOUR SONS TO THE CRUELTY OF LIFE AND HER REMAINING SON; TAKEN BY THE CRUELTY OF THE STATE. * * ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ - ਜਿਸਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਦਰਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਬਣੇ ਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਬਚਿਆ ਬੇਟਾ ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਦਰਿੰਦਗੀ ਨੇ ਖੋਹ ਲਿਆ (ਹੇਠਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹੋ ਜੀ) * Maajha Kaur is the mother of political prisoner Balbir Singh Bira. Now in her 80s, her story along with her son’s, is of great sacrifice and bravery. Maajha Kaur has lived most of her life in a small impoverished village close to the Indo-Pak border and her husband, Baag Singh, died over thirty years ago leaving her alone to look after their six children as best she could. Unfortunately due to a lack of medical aid and extreme poverty, over the years four of her sons have died after succumbing to various diseases and injuries in childhood. Her only remaining son is Balbir Singh Bira who along with his wife, Sukhjinder Kaur (Nindu), is currently imprisoned in Nabha Maximum Security Jail, while Maajha Kaur’s only daughter is married and living with her in-laws. The authorities always kept a close eye on Balbir Singh as they viewed him as a sympathizer of the Sikh movement. This close scrutiny only increased when he was released from prison in 2004 after spending 14 years in jail, including Jammu Jail, which is so far from Punjab that at the time Maajha Kaur was not even sure if her son was still alive. Upon his release, Balbir Singh returned to a normal life with his mother and also a new wife. However, this blissful period was not to last. The newlyweds were arrested from Ludhiana train station in 2009, as they returned from a trip to the historical gurdwara of Hazoor Sahib in the south of India. Since their arrest, they have been implicated in a number of cases and at present, Sukhjinder Kaur is the last female Sikh political prisoner. SOPW’s legal team continues to fight for Sukhjinder Kaur’s release. When our team visited Maajha Kaur, she told how Balbir Singh had been given the nickname ‘Bhootna’ (meaning ghost like) by police officials, due to his excellent diligence and speed at outwitting them. She gently smiled as she remembered this while tears welled up in her eyes. Maajha Kaur told how her son had been hounded and harassed consistently over the years, a common tactic to instil fear in families and psychologically scar them. Maajha Kaur now suffers from severe anxiety and finds it difficult to sleep alone in her empty home. Just before their arrest she would witness the police verbally and physically abuse Balbir Singh and his wife at the family home for no apparent reason. During this period, the police regularly came to their home on the mere suspicion of some apparently illegal activity or political activism in the state. Maajha Kaur belonged to a family that did not own any land and did not have Sikh roots. With no assets to her name and little help from people in general, she has had to fend for herself for over three decades. To make ends meet she took a job handing out water in the seed market and breaking and shifting rubble. On a good day, she earnt about 50 rupees a day (that’s 50p in UK) but even this became difficult due to old age and declining health. She has lost the sight in one eye as she was unable to afford medical care. When we first made contact with Maajha Kaur, she hadn’t visited her son for over one and a half years due to the cost of the journey. That last time she had visited him, after two hours of repeated insistence, she was only allowed to meet him for a few minutes while he sat inside a police vehicle. The journey to the prison had been arduous on her frail body as it took over four hours by bus and to then be treated that way was unacceptable and deeply saddening. As you can see in this video Maajha Kaur’s small house has few facilities. With constant power cuts even the small ceiling fan provides little relief. Other villagers are also very poor but they provide support, for instance sometimes a female neighbour will come round to sleep over so that Maajha Kaur is not alone during the night. Lastly, Maajha Kaur gave the following message to the sangat: “I HAVE LOST EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE YET I STILL SEE IT AS GURU’S WILL AND I SEE SOPW’S HELP AS GURU’S BLESSING. WITH THEIR SUPPORT, MY SON, DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AND I, GET SOME RESPITE FROM THE HARSH REALITY OF OUR LIVES. I JUST WANT MY CHILDREN TO RETURN HOME SO I CAN SEE THEM FREE BEFORE I DIE.” PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO AND LISTEN TO MAAJHA KAURS OWN WORDS: ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਕੈਦੀ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੀਰਾ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਹੈ । ਹੁਣ 80 ਸਾਲਾ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ ਵਿਥਿਆ ਮਹਾਨ ਬਲੀਦਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਦੀ ਹੈ । ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਭਾਰਤ-ਪਾਕਿ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਪੱਛੜੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਤਾਈ । ਉਸਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਬਾਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ 30 ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਆਪਣੇ 6 ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਦੇਖਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ । ਉਸਨੇ ਜੋ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ । ਬਦਕਿਸਮਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਮਦਦ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਅਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਸਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਲੱਗ ਅਲੱਗ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕਰ ਗਏ । ਉਸਦਾ ਇੱਕੋ ਇੱਕ ਬਚਿਆ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੀਰਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਸੁਖਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ (ਨਿੰਦੂ) ਨਾਲ ਨਾਭਾ ਦੀ ਮੈਕਸੀਮਮ ਸਕਿਉਰਿਟੀ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਦ ਹਨ ੳਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਇਕਲੌਤੀ ਲੜਕੀ ਵਿਆਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਹੁਰੇ ਘਰ ਹੈ । ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਰੱਖੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਦਾ ਹਿਮਾਇਤੀ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਸਨ । ਇਹ ਜਾਂਚ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਹੋਰ ਵਧ ਗਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ 14 ਸਾਲ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਬਾਅਦ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਮਿਲੀ । ਇਸ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਜੇਲ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਹ ਜੰਮੂ ਦੀ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਜਿਊਂਦਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ । ਰਿਹਾਈ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਵਵਿਆਹੁਤਾ ਪਤਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਆਮ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਜੀਣ ਲੱਗਾ । ਪਰ ਇਹ ਅਨੰਦਮਈ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੇਰ ਨਾ ਰਿਹਾ । ਇਸ ਨਵਵਿਆਹੁਤਾ ਜੋੜੇ ਨੂੰ 2009 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਸੁਖਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਆਖਰੀ ਮਹਿਲਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਕੈਦੀ ਹੈ । SOPW ਦੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਟੀਮ ਸੁਖਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਲਈ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਲੜਾਈ ਲੜ੍ਹ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ । ਜਦੋਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਟੀਮ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ “ਭੁਤਨਾ” ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ । ਇਹ ਉਸਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਉੱਦਮ ਅਤੇ ਫੁਰਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੱਟਾ ਪਾਉਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੀ । ਇਹ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਹਲਕਾ ਮੁਸਕਰਾਈ ਤੇ ਹੰਝੂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਵਗ ਤੁਰੇ । ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਉਸਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਲੰਮਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਤੰਗ ਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ । ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਡਰ ਫੈਲਾਉਣ ਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਿਕ ਮੈਂਬਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨਿਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਤੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਆਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਚਿੰਤਾ (anxiety) ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਨਾਲ ਇਕੱਲਿਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਖਾਲੀ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੌਂ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ । ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਮ ਹੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉਸਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਨੂੰਹ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਦੁਰਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦੀ ਸੀ । ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੇ ਘਟਣ ਤੇ ਜਾਂ ਰਾਜ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਸੀ । ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਜਿਸ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਸੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ । ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਆਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਗੂਣੀ ਮਦਦ ਦੀ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਤਿੰਨ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ । ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਚਲਾੳਣ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬੀਜ ਮਾਰਕੀਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਲਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਲਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਤੋੜ ਕੇ ਸਿੱਟਣ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ । ਇੱਕ ਚੰਗੇ ਦਿਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ 50 ਰੁਪਏ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਸੀ । ਪਰ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੇ ਵਿਗੜਦੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਕਮਾਈ ਵੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੋ ਗਈ । ਉਸਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਅੱਖ ਦੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਖਰਚਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ । ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਡੇਢ ਸਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ । ਅਜਿਹਾ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਸਫਰ ਲਈ ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ । ਆਖਰੀ ਵਾਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਦੋ ਘੰਟੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਰ ਵਾਰ ਬੇਨਤੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ ਦੋ ਮਿੰਟ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਗੱਡੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ । ਜੇਲ ਤੱਕ ਦਾ ਸਫਰ ਉਸਦੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਬੱਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਫਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਘੰਟੇ ਲਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਜਿਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਉਹ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਸਵੀਕਾਰਨਯੋਗ ਹੈ । ਜਿਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਵੀਡੀਉ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਦੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਸਹੂਲਤਾਂ ਹਨ । ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦੇ ਕੱਟਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਪੱਖੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਹਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ । ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਬਾਸ਼ਿੰਦੇ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਗਰੀਬ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਹ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਗਵਾਂਢੀ ਔਰਤ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੌ ਜਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ । ਅਖੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਝਾ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ “ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ SOPW ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਮੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਠੋਰ ਹਕੀਕਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਰਾਹਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ।ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਘਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਆ ਜਾਣ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਸਕਾਂ ।” https://youtube/watch?v=aqNPFh8HsU0
