#MISSIONMONDAY Mission #1 Target: Airfield at Cherbourg, France Zone 1, inbound over England - Lady GASM forms up with the rest of the squadron, in middle position (the safest). Zone 2, inbound over the English Channel - No enemy fighters. Zone 3, inbound over Target - A single Focke-Wulf Fw-190 attempts to intercept, but is driven off by fighter cover. Bomb Run - Good Weather, No Flak. Bombs off target, 0% within 1,000 feet of aim point. Zone 3, homebound over Target - One wave of Luftwaffe fighters is driven off by the guns of other Fortresses in the squadron. A second wave engages; 2 Messerschmitt Me-109s are diverted by friendly fighters but 2 others get through! The first is at 3:00 high position, in the firing arc of both the Starboard Waist gunner and the Top Turret. The Waist Gunner misses, but the Top Turret hits and destroys the fighter before it can fire! The second Messerschmitt comes in from the opposite direction, at 9:00 high. Only the Port Waist gunner can engage it. He scores hits, spoiling the fighters aim! However, one lucky cannon shell hits the port wings inboard fuel tank and it catches fire. The Pilot orders the Radio Operator to send a mayday message and then orders the crew to bail out. Luckily LG is over the Channel now. Better to brave the frigid waters than the German-occupied land! British Coastal Command search and rescue planes look for the crew until nightfall. As the last reports in, the sad truth becomes apparent: They have been unable to locate the Bombardier, Navigator, Pilot, Ball Turret Gunner or Tail Gunner . . . Result: German Air Defense Victory :(
