#MISSIONMONDAY Mission #13 Target: U-Boat Pens at St. Nazaire, France (again) Take off in England - Lady GASM II forms up with the rest of the squadron, in the safe middle position. The squadron itself is in low position within the combat box, which is risky. Zone 2, inbound over the English Channel - A Messerschmitt Me-109 attempts to target the bomber but is quickly disposed of by Ace Top Turret Gunner Clint Dumaine! Zone 3, inbound over the English Channel - No enemy fighters seen. Zone 4, inbound over Occupied France - A Me-110 comes in from 6:00 low. Its cannon shells strike the Starboard Elevator, rendering it inoperable; Luckily, the Port Elevator escaped damage (for now . . . ) Zone 5, inbound over Occupied France - Three Focke-Wulf 190s make a pass, the shells of one strike the Port Wing in the root area. Zone 6, inbound over Target - The 110 returns and brings a couple friends along this time. Their shells hit the Cockpit, knocking out oxygen to the pilots. On their return pass one falls to Dead-Eye Dumaine and the others break off. Bomb Run - Good Weather. Heavy Flak slams into the Fortress, knocking out the #4 engine as well as seriously wounding Starboard Waist Gunner Daniel Glaser and killing newly arrived Port Waist Gunner Jack Wayne Arnett. The pilot is successfully able to feather the prop on the engine. Bombs Off-Target, 0% within 1,000 feet of aiming point. Having fulfilled his primary duties, Bombardier Tyler Ottoson moves to the Waist area, so that at least one gun can be manned. With an engine out and no oxygen available to the Cockpit, the pilot must leave the protection of the formation and descend below 10,000 feet . . . Zone 6, homebound over Target - Alone and trailing smoke, LG2 becomes a magnet for Luftwaffe fighters. A group of five Focke-Wulfs converge on the Fort. The Tail Gunner is able to destroy one before it can fire but the others score hits. The inboard fuel tank on the Port Wing is hit and begins leaking fuel . . . Zone 5, homebound over Occupied France - Flak hits the plane, lightly wounding the Ball Turret Gunner as well as damaging the Tailplane and Rudder. (It also cuts the heat to the Tail Compartment but as the -17 has already descended below frostbite altitude there is no danger) Zone 4, homebound over Occupied France - No enemy fighters seen. Zone 3, homebound over the English Channel - Despite his injuries Ball Turret Gunner Kae Fajardo is able to shoot down an approaching Me-109, thereby joining Master Sgt. Dumaine in the Ace Gunner Club!!! Zone 2, homebound over the English Channel - No enemy fighters seen. Zone 1, homebound over England - Good Weather. The Lady takes her position in the landing pattern. Landing - Safe! The base doctors are able to patch up the Starboard Waist Gunner so he can continue the campaign. RESULT: Draw
