[MUNAK Global Agenda] #Agenda1 Posted on: 18th June 2014 Agenda : Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Greenhouse gases and climate change has been the concern of scientists worldwide since the 19th century, as it was realized that the emission of carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases” could increase the temperature of the earth, causing subsequent transformations to the earth’s environment. Many attribute the recent increase of storms, hurricanes, heat waves and other natural disasters to the greenhouse effect. The UN has been one of the first to act on the matter, establishing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) set up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to produce objective information on climate change. The Kyoto Protocol, which set lower emission targets for industrialized nations, set up standards that would expire in 2012. Although it succeeded in diminishing the carbon output of several member states, due to the withdrawal of important energy consumers such as the US and the expanding greenhouse gas emissions from developed and developing countries alike, total produce has reached its peak. In the Doha Conference, the United Nations came to an agreement that the Kyoto Protocol would be extended until a new pact is made in 2020. This agenda requires profound discussion because it is directly related to the maintenance of earth’s environment for the future generation. The inability for governments to create a binding contract has diminished the Kyoto Protocol’s authority. All governments, including developed and developing countries, must participate to lower greenhouse gas rates. Sources : un.org/en/globalissues/climatechange/index.shtml
