#MainstreamingFail If you think about it, mainstreaming laws (IDEA, LRE) were an absolute failure. We know this. Thinking more about the spirit of the law, where families wanted normal (gags) kids to be exposed to not normal kids. What happened instead? Tolerance did not - for the most part- develop. (And tolerance as a goal is a very low standard). Instead Disabled kids are bullied, experience social isolation, low self-esteem, and are taught that they need to bend over backwards to fix themselves to fit in. And then we see families doing everything they can medically to make their kids hearing, and able bodied in whatever ways technology makes available. And families are more vulnerable now cuz they are isolated to, cut off from folks who might give more information and options. Plus those kids we go to mainstream schools with? They are taught that they need to take care of us, Instilling in them a sense of superiority and fake benevolence - or missionary benevolence, both of which harm more than help.
