**Major Snow Storm** So do I have your attention? =) So the upper level storm system is on its way following on the heals of the cold front that moved through. The cold air isnt quite to freezing at the surface but thats okay. We get our best/heaviest snow with a ground air temp around 32-35 degrees. Basically in that environment the snow melts off the roads but sticks to the grass. It may accumulate briefly on the roads while its coming down hard but will eventually melt since the temps will be above freezing and ground temps are warm. So how can it snow when its not to the freezing point? Simple, the air just above the surface is well below freezing thanks to low thicknesses and dynamic cooling aloft. So it will be snowing to beat the band then trying to melt before it hits the ground. Hence the rain/snow mix in the forecast over a large area from OK to NM to TX. A foot of snow isnt unreasonable in NM and in parts of the TX panhandle. Several inches are likely across parts of OK, mainly, W/S and half of C. Should be a sharp gradient from C OK and points S and W. What about N TX? Yep, DFW this is your kind of system too. Going to be a very close call however, the melting line will run right through the counties. So you will actually get a mix of rain and snow. Timing: Rain/snow mix starts Wednesday way out west, then Wednesday night for OK and N/NW TX (Note DFW will likely just get rain at this time). Snow will continue Thursday morning across OK then start to shift south. Not sure at this point of the exact time it moves out, maybe by 9 am. Also several models keep the system in a closed off low formation. That means it can wobble and shift track, since it moves in slower. So additional snow late Thursday/Friday for OK and N TX as it moves across (DFWs best chance). The forecast youre seeing locally in your area will likely change a bunch as models try to guess the exact track. Snow is always tricky. Please share and download my free app below.
