(Mar 29) The 2014 Juno Nominee Honouring Ceremony for the Aboriginal Nominees was held today at the historic Government House, a house that was, at one point, used by Louis Riel when he was president of the provisional government of Red River. All Aboriginal nominees were present except Nathan Cunningham who was in route to Winnipeg from Alberta. The honouring ceremony was hosted by actress Michele Thrush, who eloquently led various speakers and performers through the program. The Aboriginal Album of the Year Nominees for 2014 include: Amanda Rheaume - Keep a Fire Desiree Dorion - Small Town Stories George Leach -Surrender Inez Jasper Burn Me Down Nathan Cunningham - Road Renditions A Tribe Called Red is up for two awards. The group is nominated for breakthrough group of the year and the groups Nation II Nation is up for electronic album of the year. Elders Jules & Margaret Lavallee and Ray Co-Co Stevenson and his traditional singers connected the ceremony to culture, community and spirit. The nominees were each given a Pendleton blanket and a traditional rattle made by David Blacksmith. There were several moving moments throughout the ceremony, a pre-audience blessing of the rattles was done by the Elders. Ray St. Germain I had an opportunity to thank and recognize the nominees and note that this year marks the 20th anniversary of an Aboriginal category created by Buffy Sainte-Marie, Elaine Bomberry and Curtis Shingoose Jonnie. More to come yo! : )
