(Mar 29th) A Tribe Called Red opened the 2014 Juno Gala Awards Dinner with a show of First Nation energy and ingenuity in mixing sound, dance and culture. The Ottawa based group received two nominations for Electronic Album of the year (which went to Ryan Hemsworth) & Breakthrough Group of the year (which country singer Brett Kissel picked up last night). Tribe have however gained a major buzz within Canadas must industry. Last nights Saturday gala is actually the big awards night as 87.2 per cent of the 2014 Juno Awards were handed out already (47 in total!). A few highlights include George Leach winning Aboriginal Album of year, Drake won rap recording of the year, Arcade Fire took album of the year, Tegan and Sara won pop album of the year. Dean Brody’s Crop Circles was named Country Album of the Year. During the tribute of music industry people that have left us, it was great to see singer/songwriter Willy Dunn be recognized, who passed away last August. It was great seeing Curtis Shingoose Jonnie attended the awards gala, he was chatting with a few members of Blue Rodeo. The televised Juno awards show this evening on CTV will feature A Tribe Called Red handing out an award and Winnipegs The Red Robe Drum Group will be making a special appearance. Indigenous music yo!
