#MaritimeShippingAcademy #MARSEC #Marsec update. MT Hai Soon 6 tanker hijacked in Gulf of Guinea by #pirates The oil tanker Hai Soon 6 was attacked and hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea. The vessel, on a voyage 46 nautical miles off the Ghanaian, coast was attacked by 10 armed men on a fast boat. The crew tried to maneuver to avoid hijacking, but without any success. The pirates boarded the vessel and took control changing the course to the Western African coast in an unknown direction. According to preliminary information all the crew have been kidnapped, but the pirates have not asked for ransom at this stage. The oil tanker Hai Soon 6 turned off its satellite and AIS system, thus disabling the location of the vessel. Usually pirates in the Gulf of Guinea hijack ships and steal the cargo and money from the crew, but during the past year there have been incidents of kidnapping. The vessel operator and International Maritime Bureau (IMB) did not share more information about the pirate attack. The oil tanker Hai Soon 6 (IMO: 9062697) has an overall length of 104.52 m, moulded beam of 15.20 m and maximum summer draft of 5.10 m. The vessel has a deadweight of 5,497 DWT and gross tonnage of 3,232 GRT. The ship was built in 1993 in Shin Kurushima Hashinama Dockyard in Japan. The vessel is operating under the flag of Kiribati and owned by Hai Soon Shipmanagement of Singapore.
