"Masbate on the other hand, although one of the provinces with lowered poverty incidence, was still consistently included in the bottom cluster of provinces in the 1st semesters of 2006, 2009 and 2012." NSCB reports consistent decline of poor families in Bicol By Sally A. Atento Thursday 6th of June 2013 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis LEGAZPI CITY, June 6 (PIA) -- The number of extremely poor families in the Bicol region consistently declined in the past six years according to the latest poverty estimates released by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) here. “Food poor or extremely poor families consistently dropped from 16.5 percent in 1st semester of 2009 to 14.1 percent in 1st semester 2012," according to the NSCB report. "Similarly, food poor population posted consistent declines from the first semester of 2006 to the first semester of 2012.” Among provinces only Catanduanes posted an increase in the number of food poor population and families. In terms of poverty incidence among the population, the region posted 34.1 percent rate during the first six months of 2012 or around 43 poor for every 100 Bicolanos. This rating is estimated at about two poor persons less compared to the number of poverty incidence recorded in 2009. This decline dramatically improved the Bicol region’s standing as the fourth in rank among the poorest region in the country in 2006 and 2009 down to the seventh rank in the first two semesters of 2012. In terms of ranking, the region has overtaken Caraga and regions VIII, X and XII. The report said among provinces, Albay and Catanduanes posted increase in poverty incidence from 2009 to 2012. Masbate on the other hand, although one of the provinces with lowered poverty incidence, was still consistently included in the bottom cluster of provinces in the 1st semesters of 2006, 2009 and 2012. Masbate and Albay were the only two provinces whose poverty incidences were higher than the regional poverty incidence in the first semester of 2012 according to the report.
