“Mayport Village under Siege” Can you imagine taking a bulldozer and leveling the historic structures that line St. George Street in St. Augustine? Can you imagine doing the same thing to the historic district of Fernandina? Strong words perhaps but truthful words when it comes to the Jacksonville Port Authority and what they’ve done to the historic village of Mayport. They came into the village several years ago and bought-up nearly the entire riverfront contemplating building a cruise terminal paying many times more than the property was worth. I’m not condemning or condoning what the property owners did, but the general public shouldn’t be denied the right to enjoy the scenic beauty of the village. The people of our community stood-up to the Port Authority and said “no” to the terminal. Sadly however, in the meantime the Port Authority having bought up the integrity of the village wasn’t satisfied until they finished the job by bulldozing down the fish-houses and livelihoods of Mayport families who have been dependent upon the bounties of the river and ocean for generations past. Yes, the Port Authority removed the very heart and proud history of a community and continues to hold it in its grasp today. The historic village of Mayport dating back to the 1500s begs for your help in taking down the iron fence that covers nearly the entire riverfront of Mayport and let the village live again. Allow the heart of the ancient village to begin beating once again. I assure you the citizens of this community as well as the nation will thank you for it. Your children and grandchildren will praise you for saving a small part of history nestled between an historic river and a magnificent sea. If you agree with this plea please pass it on. The village needs all the help it can get! The next scheduled meeting is February12th with time and place yet to be determined. Gary Crumley will keep the public updated once the meeting time and place is consummated which will probably be at the beaches. For those of you able to attend the meeting your presence and support will be appreciated. All voices will be heard!!
