“Media has tried to present truth before the nation.” Says Mr Sohail Warraich, at UOG “Nations making progress in the world have never hid their face to reality. We should also try to face realities. The media has played an important role in recent years in Pakistan. It has tried to present truth before the nation. We can make progress by following the truth. According to some people, media is trying to make the matters sensational. The truth is that media is trying to depict events of daily life in Pakistan as they occur. The realities are always bitter. In my opinion media is quickly forwarding towards truth. It is the basic right of the masses to have an approach to true information. Most of our journalists want to speak the truth, but circumstances do not permit them to do so. I will suggest to the students for speaking truth and helping truth.” These views were expressed by renowned journalist, intellectual, columnist and famous anchorperson of GEO News Channel Mr Sohail Warraich addressing the participants of a symposium “Changing Trends of Media in Pakistan” organized collaboratively by Directorate of Media & Publications and CMCS University of Gujrat (UOG). Answering different questions raised by students and faculty members, Mr Sohail Warraich said, “Media has played an important role in transforming the lifestyle of the people. It has brought a positive change. Wherever media will be allowed to work independently, it will help the people for the cause of their welfare. Pakistani media has always broadcasted noticeable stuff. If media points out some thing and it is useful for the information of the masses, then it is doing a good job. We should try to avoid assumptions and irresponsibility. Baseless matters cannot become profitable. Media is not able to define national interest at this time but truth is the most important national interest. I think a journalist should have balanced point of view and always try to present both sides of the coin without becoming a partisan. Journalism is a difficult task. If national interest should have been preferred in Pakistan, there would be no extremism, sectarianism and other types of anarchy. Dissidents are found in every society. Each individual has a constitutional right to differ an opinion. It is not right to call a dissident as a traitor.” Paying homage to University of Gujrat, he said’ “Gujrat is known as the Greece of Punjab. The people of Gujrat are intelligent and hardworking. I am feeling pleasure while my interaction with the students of University of Gujrat at an intellectual level.” Dr Tahir Aqil, Registrar UOG said in his closing remarks, “This interactive session of UOG students with Mr Sohail Warraich has proved beneficial and useful.
