#Medication for #Menopause Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - TopicsExpress

#Medication for #Menopause Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been in use for over twenty years. It may be given as tablets, vaginal creams, patches or implants. The treatment includes oestrogen to relieve the symptoms and progesterone to balance the effects of oestrogen. Progesterone will cause a “bleed” like a normal period. If the womb has been removed, only oestrogen is needed to ease the symptoms. Because hormone treatment has benefits as well as risks, learn all you can about hormone replacement therapy before deciding on treatment. HRT helps prevent osteoporosis (weakening of bones) and coronary heart disease (deterioration of the arteries/blood vessels), and brings relief to symptoms of menopause (hot flushes, vaginal dryness). HRT is NOT an oral contraceptive and normal contraception methods need to continue. Vaginal creams may help dryness. #Alternative measures for Menopause: • Take calcium supplements if your diet does not provide 1000mg of calcium a day • Herbal remedies may be used to help control the symptoms • It is advisable to give up smoking • Vitamin supplements may be helpful • A balanced diet can improve your physical condition • Some people may wish to seek advice from an alternative therapist *Please do not hesitate to contact us if: • You experience excessive bleeding, prolonged periods or spotting between your expected periods.
